Identification and Disidentification in Psychosynthesis

Psychosynthesis psychology, developed by Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli, introduces the pivotal concepts of identification and disidentification. These concepts form the core of psychosynthesis therapy, a holistic and transpersonal approach that seeks to guide individuals toward self-realization and personal growth.

Identification in psychosynthesis refers to the process by which an individual becomes excessively attached to specific aspects of their personality or experiences. This overattachment can take various forms, such as identifying strongly with a role (e.g., parent, professional), emotions, thoughts, or physical appearance. When someone is overly identified with a particular element, it tends to dominate their self-perception and can limit their overall self-awareness.

The implications of identification are significant. Excessive identification can lead to a narrowed and distorted sense of self. For example, if an individual is strongly identified with their professional role, they may struggle to distinguish their worth beyond their career achievements. This narrow identification can result in inner conflicts, a sense of emptiness, and limitations in personal and spiritual growth.

On the other hand, disidentification, a key concept in psychosynthesis, involves consciously separating oneself from these identified elements. It is a process of gaining distance from the various roles, emotions, thoughts, and other aspects that one has become excessively attached to. Disidentification allows individuals to recognize that they are more than the sum of these parts and that their true self, often referred to as the “I” or the “Observer,” transcends these temporary and changeable elements.

The process of disidentification is not a detachment that promotes apathy or disengagement from life. Instead, it is about cultivating a more balanced and objective relationship with one’s experiences. By disidentifying, individuals create psychological space for self-reflection and a clearer understanding of their true nature.

Psychosynthesis therapy facilitates the disidentification process through various therapeutic techniques. The therapist provides a supportive and non-judgmental space for individuals to explore their identified elements. This exploration involves examining roles, relationships, and patterns of thinking or behaving that may be constraining personal growth.

One practical technique used in psychosynthesis is guided imagery. In this method, individuals are guided to visualize and explore different aspects of themselves, helping to uncover layers of identification. For instance, a person might visualize themselves in various roles or situations, allowing them to witness and understand the different facets of their personality.

The benefits of disidentification are multifaceted. By disidentifying from specific roles or emotions, individuals can experience increased emotional resilience. Rather than being overwhelmed by intense emotions, they can observe and understand them more objectively. This process fosters a sense of inner freedom and reduces reactivity to life’s challenges.

Moreover, disidentification supports personal and spiritual growth. As individuals disidentify from limiting beliefs and roles, they gain access to higher states of consciousness, fostering a connection with the transpersonal dimensions of the self. This transpersonal aspect is central to psychosynthesis, acknowledging that individuals are not just isolated entities but are interconnected with a broader, spiritual reality.

In conclusion, identification and disidentification are foundational concepts in psychosynthesis psychology. Identification involves becoming overly attached to specific elements of one’s personality, while disidentification is the conscious process of separating from these identified elements. Psychosynthesis therapy guides individuals through the transformative journey of disidentification, fostering increased self-awareness, emotional resilience, and connection with their true self and the transpersonal dimensions of existence. Through this process, individuals can break free from limiting identifications and embark on a path of holistic personal and spiritual growth.
